Viewing Tips

Tips for viewing my photos online:

Since the majority of web users run a screen resolution of 800 x 600 pixels, I have sized most of my photos at 640 x 480.  This way they mostly fill the screen without requiring a lot of scrolling. (Your browser window takes up the remainder of the screen).

Viewing my photos offline:

They have also been “thinned” so that they download faster.  Onscreen they still look reasonably good, but if you want to print them they will look very rough.

Purchasing my photos:

My early photos were with a 640 x 480 camera, but if the shot was taken after the fall of 1998 you can purchase a 1280 x 960 (1.3 million pixels)  resolution image that will make a 4 x 6 print that rivals standard 35mm silver halide film.

Sizing of my photos:

Most of the pictures on my site are represented by “thumbnails”. These are very small, quick to download images that get across what the photo is.  If you click on a thumbnail with your mouse, in most instances, a full size image will appear. In some cases a photo has been used as a link to another page, on my site or elsewhere, and you will be taken there instead of to a larger photo.  I believe that these are mostly obvious.

A few of the photos are larger than 640 x 480 due to their content.  Some, for instance where I could not stand back any further to get the “whole shot”, are made up of more than one shot pieced together.

Mouse tip:

If you position your cursor (the mouse pointer) over a photo or link you will often get a description of what to expect when you click on it.  If it is a particularly long description it will disappear before you finish reading it, but not if you keep the mouse moving slightly over the image as you read it!
